Created more than five decades ago, the 7,900-acre Bud Love Wildlife Habitat Management Area in northern Wyoming is home to more than 500 wintering elk, 200 mule deer and an array of wildlife species ranging from moose and mountain lions to black bears, upland birds, small mammals and fish. It is specifically managed to support habitat for those animals.
In 2012, a wildfire charred more than 4,000 acres across the Bighorn National Forest and destroyed fencing separating the forest from the WHMA. Without sturdy, permanent fencing, cattle had free access to the WHMA, removing critical forage and vegetation for wildlife. For more than a decade, the Wyoming Game and Fish Department pieced together makeshift fencing across that stretch to try to manage livestock grazing.
In 2024, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation supplied grant funding to help buy materials and contract a helicopter to airlift them into the remote, rugged site for a two-phase project. In phase one, Game and Fish crews erected a temporary electric fence to keep cattle out while awaiting the arrival of permanent fencing. In phase two, workers built 1.4 miles of wildfire-resistant and wildlife-friendly fencing that makes it easier for wildlife to move across the landscape.
They also improved access roads and public parking areas for hunters, anglers, hikers, campers and others. Game and Fish continues to monitor the fencing and its effectiveness.
At RMEF we’re not just conserving what’s here today; we’re creating what’s possible for tomorrow. That means more access, healthier habitats and a stronger future for all big game.
One square mile a day. Over 10 million acres by 2030.
