Fencing is an invaluable tool for ranchers, allowing them to better contain and control their livestock. But sometimes, fencing can be dangerous or even deadly for elk, mule deer and other species trying to cross the landscape.

The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation has a history of supporting wildlife-friendly fencing and innovative technology to improve habitat connectivity. Some ranchers started using virtual fencing in the early 2020s. The setup for this remotely operated program requires a tower and electronic collars around every cow’s neck. It works much like an electronic collar worn by a hunting dog combined with a wireless fence that keeps a family dog in an unfenced yard.In this case, the tower sends data to a rancher’s phone who uses an app to track cattle movement and raise or lower virtual fences within their pastures to better manage cattle use of the landscape.

Virtual fencing can also be used to protect riparian habitat from overuse and burn scars so they can bounce back. In 2023 and 2024, RMEF granted funding for six pilot projects in Colorado, Montana, Oregon, South Dakota and Wyoming to assess its feasibility and effectiveness. Though there are challenges, this emerging technology shows early benefits in managing cattle and improving landscape connectivity.

Looking to the future, RMEF awarded funding for research to help assess the utility of virtual fencing as a management tool in improving habitat use and movement for elk and other big game.

At RMEF, we’re not just conserving what’s here today, we’re creating what’s possible for tomorrow. That means more access, healthier habitats and a stronger future for all big game. One square Mile a day. Over 10 million acres by 2030.

About the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation
Now in its fifth decade of Conserving America’s Big Game, RMEF will extend its impact on habitat and public land access to 10 million acres by 2030. RMEF conserves and enhances habitat for elk and all big game, opens and improves access for hunting and other outdoor recreation, conducts science-based wildlife research and ensures the future of our hunting heritage through advocacy, outreach and education. Members, volunteers and supporters nationwide help RMEF further its mission. Find out more and join the movement at rmef.org or 800-CALL-ELK.
