RMEF Volunteer Work Project

During RMEF Big Game Days, attendees can join RMEF staff on hands-on conservation projects that directly benefit wildlife habitat on private lands near Missoula. These volunteer opportunities allow participants to give back to elk country while experiencing the conservation work that drives RMEF’s mission.

Hosted as part of RMEF Big Game Days, this event reflects RMEF’s commitment to inspiring the next generation to value conservation and carry forward America’s hunting heritage.

Lolo Creek Project Information

About the Property

  • Located approximately 12 miles southwest of Missoula, this 1,740+ acre property offers several opportunities to improve wildlife movement and habitat conditions.
  • Fence Removal Volunteers will remove old fencing from the landscape using hand tools and roll wire for removal. Clearing these barriers helps wildlife move freely across the property. Difficulty: Light
  • Wildlife-Friendly Fence Reconstruction Assist RMEF staff in rebuilding sections of fence along neighboring property boundaries using wildlife-friendly best management practices. Difficulty: Moderate

About the Property

  • RMEF was generously gifted a 3,100+ acre property approximately 25 miles southeast of Missoula, Montana. Active stewardship is essential to maintaining healthy wildlife habitat, and volunteers will assist RMEF staff with several restoration efforts.
  • Riparian Area Conifer Removal Remove young conifers encroaching on the Ryan and Marcella Creek riparian areas to promote healthy cottonwood and aspen communities that support diverse wildlife habitat. Difficulty: Moderate
  • Aspen Stand Regeneration Cut and scatter conifer species around an existing aspen grove to reduce competition and encourage aspen growth. The hike to the site gains roughly 1,000 feet of steep elevation. Difficulty: Arduous Activity subject to fire restrictions.
  • Weed Pulling Help combat invasive spotted knapweed, a persistent threat to native grasslands, by pulling and bagging plants for removal. Difficulty: Light to Moderate
