The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) issued a woman a citation worth more than $6,000 for shooting and killing two young bull elk she thought were deer.
Salina Ann Beltran shot the elk while hunting along in a treestand. After later recognizing the mistake, Beltran contacted authorities to report what happened. DNR officials say the incident highlights two key aspects of hunter education.
“The first is to be sure of your target and what’s beyond,” Todd Schaller, DNR chief conservation warden, told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “The other is, if you make a mistake, be honest and contact the department.”
