Elk NetworkThree Rivers, OR – onX Public Access Project

onX Public Access | June 1, 2023

When it comes to ideal elk range – the less fragmented, the better.

You’ll find the Siuslaw National Forest west of Portland and south of Tillamook, parallel to the Oregon Coast.

The riparian habitat and meadows within the lush forestland are extremely scarce, making up less than one percent of the Coast Range.

Within this unique landscape was a 447-acre private inholding of rare habitat for Roosevelt elk, blacktail deer, mountain lions, black bears and other wildlife.

And since the property is home to the headwaters of the Three Rivers and Nestucca River systems, it also supplies cold water habitat for salmon, trout and other waterborne species.

To conserve the land and improve connectivity, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation worked closely with the landowner to purchase the tract in 2022 and then conveyed it to the Siuslaw National Forest.

Now, the land is open to improved management and public access for hunting, fishing, hiking and other forms of recreation.

Since 1984, RMEF opened or improved public access to more than 1.4 million acres of land.
