Hunters chasing elk in California in 2023 will have increased opportunities after the California Fish and Game Commission adopted robust recommendations presented by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, and supported by the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.
Commissioners voted to create a new hunt zone in the Tejon Rocky Mountain Elk Management Unit with 10 cow tags and five bull tags. They also allotted 10 bull and 10 cow tags for the new Central Coast Tule Elk Hunt Zone and six cow tags and four bull tags for the new Gabilan Tule Elk Hunt Zone. In total, commissioners grew hunting opportunity by 100 elk tags.
RMEF testified before the commissioners at the Fresno hearing in favor of the increase.
