Elk NetworkNebraska Approves Mountain Lion Management Plan

General | October 29, 2017

For the first time ever, the state of Nebraska has a mountain lion management plan. Adopted by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, it includes a compilation of various policies that guide management, just as commission policies do for other wildlife.

The plan calls for wildlife managers to monitor mountain lion populations and allows the use of regulated hunting to meet management objectives. It also allows the commission director to authorize the removal of mountains lions that jeopardize Nebraska’s bighorn sheep herd.

Mountain lions disappeared in Nebraska toward the end of the 19th century. There were no confirmed sightings in the state until the early 1990s.
