When you look at the numbers, the elk population in the Black Hills of South Dakota is doing well.
“We’re about at our objective, and we have been for several years,” Andy Linbloom, South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks senior big-game biologist in Rapid City, told the Rapid City Journal. “We’ve been at about 7,000, and we’re at roughly 6,900 now.”
Data shows hunters took 1,186 elk in 2017 and 1,155 in 2016.
