After a two week search, crews found the body of man who disappeared while elk hunting in west-central Washington.
Jay Schreckengost sought elk in early November 2021 near the small town of Clifdell in Kittitas County but did not return when expected. That launched an extensive search involving more than 60 different agencies and organizations. Crews found his body about half a mile from his pickup. Authorities say there is no sign of foul play.
Schreckengost served as deputy chief for the Seattle Fire Department.
“We are incredibly saddened by this news and are all grieving the loss of one of our own,” the Seattle Fire Department wrote in an Instagram post. “Deputy Chief Schreckengost was a husband, father and friend to all, and our hearts are with his family right now who have been at the site every day searching alongside search and rescue, fire and law enforcement agencies.”
