It is one of the lushest areas in a state known for its bone dry, arid, desert landscapes.
Just north of the small town of Battle Mountain in northcentral Nevada, you’ll find the newly created Argenta Wildlife Management Area.
The state’s 13th W-M-A covers more than 1,500 acres where Rock Creek joins the Humboldt River, creating miles of sloughs and waterways.
The riparian and wetland habitat supports a wide range of vegetation as well as bird and animal life ranging from elk, mule deer and pronghorn antelope to more than 90 species of shore, wading and songbirds including turkeys, pheasants, swans and sandhill cranes.
It is an oasis for animals and humans alike.
Elk use the immediate area and the river channel as security cover as they move across and through the surrounding uplands.
In 2022, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation worked with a landowner who valued the conservation merits of the land, the Nevada Department of Wildlife and Nevada Division of State Lands to acquire the former ranchland opening to public access what was previously private ownership.
In addition to hunting, it’s used for fishing, birdwatching and other recreational activities.
Since 1984, RMEF opened or improved public access to more than 1.4 million acres of land.
