Elk NetworkWatch: Idaho Biologists Free Bull Elk Tangled in Tarp

Below is a news release from the Idaho Department of Fish and Game.

Wildlife biologists from the Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG) recently rushed to rescue a bull elk entangled in a hay tarp in the Monteview area about 50 miles northwest of Idaho Falls.

A landowner called IDFG to report the animal after discovering it on his property. The Clark County Sheriffs’ office also called in a report. Wildlife biologists sneaked up on the elk and tranquilized it to prevent injury.

“The tarp covered the elk’s eyes and he could barely see,” said Brett Panting, IDFG wildlife biologist. “I am glad we were able to get to him before he injured himself.”

After they sedated the mature bull, biologists worked quickly to remove the tarp from its antlers. They also examined the animal for injuries and took blood samples.

“We appreciate working with landowners in these situations,” says Curtis Hendricks, IDFG regional wildlife manager. “His phone call made all the difference for this elk.”
