As a youngster, Dawn Alden-Pratt was tired of hearing all about her brothers being out in the woods each and every fall with their father.
“All I heard was, ‘Mom, we’re having such a great time hunting with dad,'” Adlen-Pratt told the Macomb Daily. “I was probably about 12, and when my dad got home I told him I wanted to go, too.”
So she joined her family hunting in the outdoors and now, many years later, she is passing that tradition down to her daughter, Autumn.
Dawn and Autumn are among a growing number of female hunters in the state of Michigan and across the nation. According to Michigan Department of Natural Resources statistics reported by the Macomb Daily, Michigan had 66,159 female hunters in 2017 compared to 63,760 in 2007. If you do the math, that’s an increase of four percent plus female hunters now constitute 11 percent of the overall in-state hunter population.
