There are approximately 175,000 moose across Alaska and many Alaskans rely on a freezer full of moose meat to help them make it through the long winters.

According to a report in the Anchorage Daily News, 29,000 Alaskans and out-of-state residents hunt for moose each fall and they take more than 7,200 of the animals. That equates into greater than 3.5 million pounds of processed meat.

Research indicates more than 90 percent of surveyed households in rural Alaska use moose meat.

That same research shows moose hunting generates $78 million for the state’s economy.
