Elk NetworkInfo Sought in South Dakota Elk Poaching

Wildlife officials are seeking information regarding the poaching of two spike elk in southwest South Dakota. Residents about 12 miles southwest of Pringle said they heard gun shots on Dec. 13 and found two carcasses the next day.

“We have a cow season going on right now, so it’s possible that hunter shot these elk and then saw they were spikes when they (the hunters) got up to them and left them lay,” Ron Tietsort, GFP conservation officer, told the Rapid City Journal. “It’s just such a terrible waste of good quality elk meat,” he said. “If someone did do this on accident, call us and tell us about it — we can work something out and at least salvage the meat.”
