Elk NetworkElk Freed from Chair Stuck on Its Neck

From hammocks and soccer nets to swing sets, Christmas lights, fencing, zip lines and even a spare tire, wildlife officers have just about seen it all when it comes to stuff that impedes elk and deer.

A recent call from an Estes Park, Colorado, resident revealed the latest challenge. This time, a cow elk sat under a large conifer with a heavy, metal chair wrapped around its neck. An officer with Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) worked with two members of the Estes Park Police Department to monitor and eventually solve the situation.

They used a dart gun to immobilize the elk with a tranquilizer drug, allowing them to get under the tree and carefully remove the chair without causing any harm. Once freed, CPW applied an ear tag so the cow can be identified going forward. After several minutes, the animal got its wits back, stood and walked away.

Wildlife officials remind homeowners to check their property and secure all items that may cause issues for wildlife.
