Did Somebody Say “Eeooowwuhh…ugh…ugh…ugh”?
By Michael Gookins, Texas Regional Director
Texas may be short on wild elk (only five small herds roam the Lone Star State), but it was long on elk enthusiasts and RMEF volunteers on June 14, during the state’s first annual Elk Calling Contest held at the local Bass Pro Shop in Katy.
Chapter volunteers ranging from as far north as Amarillo and as far south as Houston were responsible for making this event an outstanding success. RMEF volunteers demonstrated what true teamwork is all about, covering all aspects of the senior and junior division events, including master of ceremonies, panel judges, scoring panelists, time keepers and more.
Sammy Gosnell of Canyon Lake bugled his way to the top of the senior division. Gary Bowdoin of Crawford took second place, and Walt Isenhour of McDade won third. Darian Janik walked away with first prize in the junior division. Cayde Christie of Amarillo won second place, while sister Chirae Christie took third.
The Great Elk Tour was on hand to help draw people in and deliver the Elk Foundation’s message that Great Elk Need Great Habitat. Sponsors included Bass Pro Shop, Primos Game Calls, HS Strut and Quaker Boy.
Many thanks to everyone for all the hard work leading to a successful and exciting event!
